Verify a download (SHA256 checksums)

Until Chat or Rewrite is on, Writ contacts only GitHub, to check for updates and to download one you install, and the automatic check can be turned off (privacy).

Before you install

macOSSigned and notarized by Apple, so there is no warning to click through.
WindowsThe .msi is not code-signed yet, so SmartScreen shows a warning on first run: More info, then Run anyway. The checksum below is how to verify it instead.
LinuxThe AppImage needs FUSE 2: install libfuse2t64 on Ubuntu 24.04 or later and Debian 13 or later, or libfuse2 on earlier releases.

Verify a download

Every release ships a SHA256SUMS.txt. On macOS or Linux:

shasum -a 256 Writ_0.5.0_universal.pkg

Compare the output with the line for that file. The current sums:

First open on macOS

  1. Open the .pkg and follow the installer.
  2. Launch Writ from Applications, choose the format for new files and the apps to switch on, then Continue. Writ keeps running after you switch away.
  3. Press ⌘⇧Space from any app to bring it up, and again to put it away.

Updates

Writ checks GitHub Releases shortly after launch, at most once a day, and offers the new version; nothing installs without a click. The check verifies a signed manifest and can be turned off in Settings. Package-manager installs update through the package manager instead.

Uninstall

Delete the app. Your files stay where they are, including Writ's folder, and Writ's own data stays in ~/.writ until you delete that folder too.
