Writ and Obsidian on one folder
Both apps read Markdown files from a folder, so both can open the same one.
One folder
Use Move⦠in Settings, General, Folder to point Writ at the folder Obsidian uses: the files already in Writ's folder move into it, and its own files open where they are. A name both folders hold stops the move. Writ skips .obsidian/ and writes nothing there on its own, so Obsidian keeps working from the same folder. The setup guide lists what carries over and what stays as written.
The same folder in each app
| Obsidian | Writ | |
|---|---|---|
| Files | Markdown in the folder. | The same Markdown, plus any other text file you open from anywhere on disk. |
| Links | [[Wikilinks]], backlinks, graph. | The same [[links]] in Markdown files. Backlinks and the graph are the Connections and Graph apps, switched on in Settings, Apps. |
| Properties and tags | Frontmatter and #tags. | Read from the same frontmatter and the same #tags. |
| Rendering | Live Preview and Reading view. | Inline and Source. Tables, math and Mermaid are drawn in Inline; callouts and embeds show as written. |
| Plugins | Community plugins, installed per folder. | None. Chat, rewriting and an MCP server for other programs are apps in Settings. |
| Mobile and sync | Apps on every platform, paid sync. | Desktop only. Sync is whatever you do with the folder. |
| Price | Free. Sync and Publish are paid. | Free. MIT. |
What stays in Obsidian
Canvas, block references, templates, community plugins, Sync and Publish. A file a plugin wrote shows the text it holds in Writ.
